[The following letter is from Ernst’s mother, Antonie Weisz.]

October 23, 1940

Dear children!

Yesterday I received your letter of the 10th. That the tone of my last letter sounded somewhat despondent is due to my temperament. I have trouble suffering privation.

That Mama signs the letters is due to the fact that the writer of the letters has to mail them in person, and Papa already is too sluggish to go to the post office. Otherwise Papa is doing well, but his feet are giving out, and other signs of aging are increasing which, however, at his age are usual. Please let us know also of your further efforts, and of the various personalities, because that provides a certain amount of assurance for us. As to Poldi, he is busy learning English and has made a certain amount of progress. But at the moment there is not much sense in thinking of the future, since unfortunately it cannot be foreseen. As to business, nothing is new for the time being. There are still differences over the price with the buyer of the inventory.57

Otherwise nothing is new. Write soon. Warmest greetings to you all, also to Hansl and Ditta from your loving Mama.

P.S. The children should write at length, as they promised us.

My dearest children!

I think I have answered your letter of October 1st twice, but won’t let the week go by without writing. This is the second week we have not heard from you, although we are certain that you have written, and that there is no serious reason for you not to have done so. Now, to our chat, it is so cold here that we are sitting near the oven. It is unpleasant to knit in a cold room. So we turn on the gas in the kitchen and make ourselves as comfortable as possible. We read in the papers that you’ve already had your first snowfall, is that true? I hope that you have central heating in your apartment so that you don’t have to freeze. Now, my dear children, I want to thank you once again for the birthday wishes. It was a sad day for me, I couldn’t recall previous ones. Father, Ilka, and Blanka brought me chocolates, Frau Fuchs flowers. Sunday all the friends turned up. Of course, they send their regards, especially Herr Kassner and Vally. Today a card came from Aranka, who is also pleased that the children have arrived. Again, two addresses that may be useful for you, namely Mr. Aldar Hamburger, Hotel Windsor 100 West 58th Street. He is an American citizen and well-to-do, one of Marzi’s nephews. The other one (you will be surprised) is Anny Hockmann, whom you met when we were together in Pressburg. Her husband was Jewish, she divorced him and then married a rich American. They will be pleased to hear from you. If it isn’t too much, go to see them with regards from Tante and Uncle Marzi. They too would like to hear from you.
